But then OK Go releases a new album and another fun choreographed video, this time with marching band:
OK Go – This Too Shall Pass from OK Go on Vimeo.
If you can recall, these guys got internet famous in 2006 with music videos of them dancing in a backyard, and again on treadmills. Their new album, entitled “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky”, is out now (for once I mention an album that’s already released). I’m really digging the lo-fi videos from the indie music scene, another one being the semi-deconstructed Cousins by Vampire Weekend.
Many of you don’t know this, but I got into music via marching band. My first instrument was the glockenspiel. Believe me, it’s hard to aim for the right key when you’re stomping around. Also when you have bad aim to begin with. The clarinet was easier, it stayed still.
What got me in that video wasn’t so much the marching band, which is awesome (and which also makes this a better version than the song recorded on the album), but the fact that members of the marching band were decked out in ghillie suits. Secret commando marching band!
I don’t know these guys, but liked the song. Is it representative of their other work? I’m guessing they don’t usually do marching band stuff.
@Garth I guess I’d generally classify them as fun indie rock, though they’re not technically an indie band. Generally light-hearted stuff, they remind me of Supergrass. They’ve toured with They Might Be Giants.
Kind of a fun video — nothing compared to the spectacular single-take synchronized walking video.
But fun video aside, nothing can take away from the face that this song SUCKS. It’s mixed horribly. There pretty much aren’t any lyrics — certainly none of any thought.
I hope they sell lots of licenses to high-school marching bands, but this is just a lousy song.
@Tod The mix is actually not what’s in the album version of the song, which doesn’t have any marching band instrumentation at all. They were probably aiming for something that sounded “live” and therefore more raw. I don’t mind it, and I enjoy the video and the song without worrying too much as to whether it’s particularly deep or meaningful.
Saw this today; and thought it was another great video of OK Go.
