@Beth The lucking out on a workplace with 1/3 females was more about that being such a higher percentage of females than the norm in IT. I read somewhere it was 10% female on average, though that might be high too. There weren't that many girls in my classes in CS.

@Air I'm surprised that there'd be such a difference in, what, 8-9 years?

@Gill - I totally see what you mean about wishing that it was just normal for women to be in tech (or science or math or whatever field) the way that having boys and girls in the same class is just normal. But clearly we aren't there yet (even in your example of "lucking out" because there was a time when it was 1/3 females - clearly a 50-50 split isn't the norm. How we get to the point where it's just normal for women and men to be in whatever field interests them... I guess, like Airdrie says, it will happen with time...

@Air - I remember when I was in grade 12 physics and I saw that there was only one female in OAC (i.e., grade 13 in Ontario) physics and I thought "Cool! Maybe next year *I* can be the token female in OAC physics." But the next year there were a few females in my OAC physics class and I was so disappointed. But then, I have this weird fascination with wanting to be different than everyone else.

Give it time... eventually all the old ladies like me will be dead, leaving all the young kids who don't remember a time when men dominated science and technology fields. (The only reason I did not take Physics 12 was because I'd be the ONLY girl in the class, and that was not where I wanted to be...)
