Friday Unemployment Blogging

I was rather surprised to find out after lunch today that my position has been terminated at my now former employer.

I’m so surprised that I can’t even comment. Though I suppose I should be grateful that I finally get some time off.

That sucks. Time for a road trip.

  2. Miranda says:

Uh…. wow. I guess that answers the “they don’t seem to value or understand the point of having a database administrator” discussion last weekend

Employment is seriously overrated. Enjoy the long weekend, and worry about it later :)

Brutal. But there is something to be said about having time off. I’m sure you’ll find a new gig you like in no time when you want to!

  4. Mel says:

Oh no…sorry to hear it :( Though as you say, I think you deserve a break. *hug*

  5. Kimli says:

Seriously? They didn’t deserve you. You’re better off – take the weekend, concentrate on being fabulous, and everything will fall into place. You are awesome!

  6. alexis says:

Wow. I hope something better comes your way.

  7. Gillian says:

Whoa! That’s crazy! Come to NY!
How do you feel about all this?

jeez IT can be a pain sometimes… some notice would have been nice?! well you definitely deserve the impromptu vacation, now you have an extra long weekend :) you will find something better for sure

  9. Jeremy says:

    WTF??
Then again, I had something similar happen to me as well a few years back, so I suppose I’m not really shocked. Maybe our respective former bosses are related….
    Sorry to hear it Gill

  10. Huh, surprised, wow, jeez, etc. that they’d eliminate the position. It’s not like they didn’t have enough for you to do.
Maybe they want to get rid of the well-known bottleneck a DBA can be and just let everybody do whatever they want to the databases without that delaying step. Yeah, that sounds reasonable.

  11. jeffy says:

    Ouch. Severance?
Put off getting a new one as long as you can!

  12. Aw hon… This only means BIGGER and better things for you. Everything happens for a reason, and this was obviously the time you took another step ahead with a firm that will appreciate you.

I’m so glad we’re heading out tonight… We’re gonna have a massively AWESOME time. :D

You rock… And, it’s all good.

  13. dearheart says:

I’m sorry, but that just smells rotten, in all kinds of ways.

  14. Chris T says:

That really sucks and I commiserate. It happened to me at the beginning of June…a little different circumstances with the same result. It is one thing when you want to be without a job or look for another one….it is a whole other thing when the employer makes the decision. Life sucks. Take care of yourself. Are you eligible for EI???

Do take some time off to enjoy the last days of summer. After labor day the market usually picks up. You’re not only a techie – you have the soft skills that are appreciated by any employee.

  16. Austin says:

If they had laid you off in July, you could have come to Salt Spring to debauch among the trees, merrily recumbent in a hammock strung between the Buddhist trees. O well. next incarnation.

  17. Ed says:

Exorbitant crapulence. Happy thoughts from me to you, and I’m sure that you’ll be better off in the end. Take some Gill time and get your Gill on.

  18. bcrem says:

    Hey Gil,
Sorry to hear it – but as everyone’s been pointing out here: time for a little vacation! Go somewhere scenic, enjoy fall (great time of year)…things’ll sort themselves out.
