Jim
Gunson began his life as a
potter in 1974, studying under Fred Owen at Douglas College, B.C.,
Canada. After
two years Jim drifted away from this pursuit and only returned to it,
by chance, in 1990, when he fell in love with the craft for
the second, more intense, time. After studying with Robert Bush, at
Place des Artes, in Coquitlam, Jim set up his own studio and joined the
Fraser Valley Potters Guild. In 1992, Jim began two years of study
under David Lloyd, at Kwantlen University College. Jim's work is mainly functional stoneware. As a relatively new potter he continues to explore new forms and decorative techniques. He fires either at cone 6, oxidation, in his studio or relies on the kindness of strangers to fire at cone 10, reduction. When the opportunity arises he also raku fires. ![]() Jim received an honorable mention at the 2004 Fraser Valley Potters Guild Show for this mural of the Scottish fishing village of Pittenweem. |
